Gary Roosevelt High School

What an up and down year the Gary Roosevelt 4x440 relay of Eugene Anderson, James Harris, Larry Hood and Walter Little had. They finished second in the sectional to Gary Tolleston, then won the regional with a time of 3:15.7, less than a half second off the national high school record and an all-time state record. It was the fastest high school time in the country in the event that season.

Larry Hood placed fourth in the 220-yard dash, James Harris set the 880-yard record in 1:54.4, which stood until Leroy Spikener of Gary Tolleston broke it in 1967 in 1:54.0.

Walter Little had one of the downers, falling near the finish line in the 220 yard race.

Then came the race all had looked forward to: the 4x440 relay. On a soggy track that had produced two individual records that day (880 and 120 yard high hurdles), came the relay in which Gary Roosevelt had beaten Gary Tolleston by some 25 yards in the regional. Little was questionable due to the injury that occurred in the fall but had the determination to help Velt set another record. However, that choice was not as productive as expected. Gary Tolleston won and set the finals record at 3:17.4.
