Harry Friday was born into a tenant farmer’s family in Chalmers, Indiana. He became quite an athlete and went about his high school athletic endeavors in the same manner and this got to the famous coach at University of Chicago, Alonzo Stagg. He offered Harry a chance to attend university and promised to make him a greater athlete.
Scott Fangman came to the University of Indianapolis in 1997 after 14 seasons as head coach at Southport High School. His teams were ranked in the state for 12 consecutive years. Finishing in the top ten at the state level five times. Fangman coached five individual state champions and three state runners-up. His Southport teams posted an overall record of 490-152, winning two Marion County titles and a pair of sectional championships.
Ronald Golston was the 1964 IHSAA State Champion in the 880 yard run with a time of 1:55.7, which was a new school record.
Ron was a 1961 cross country finalist. He was a member of the championship 1963 Indiana Inter-Conference Mile Relay at Purdue University. In 2014, he was a member of Indiana’s Golden Track and Field Team and a member of the 1963 IHSAA state finals runner-up mile relay team.
What an up and down year the Gary Roosevelt 4x440 relay of Eugene Anderson, James Harris, Larry Hood and Walter Little had. They finished second in the sectional to Gary Tolleston, then won the regional with a time of 3:15.7, less than a half second off the national high school record and an all-time state record. It was the fastest high school time in the country in the event that season.
Larry Henning has been involved in track and field and cross country for almost his whole life. He ran track and cross country at Valparaiso High School. After college, he started teaching at Carroll. Since retired, he continues as a volunteer coach for both the girls’ and boys’ programs.
Ellie was a three-time all-state member for track and field in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Ellie set the Indiana state finals record of 13-6 1/4 in 2009 which stood for 14 years until broken in 2023. She also holds the Pendleton Heights school record with a vault of 13-7. At the national level, Ellie placed second at the 2009 Nike Outdoor Nationals. In 2010, she was recognized as a SAMMY Scholar Athlete and the Gatorade Indiana Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Ellie captained the Pendleton Heights track team to the 2009 Hoosier Heritage conference title and was part of the three-time sectional championship team. She also captained the Pendleton Heights cheerleading team to 2010 All-State honors.
Futsum had a great career at North Central High School, from the high plateau of East Africa to the plains of midwest America. He was a three time IHSAA state cross country champion and runner-up as a freshman. His 2011 record time of 14:48.8 remains the IHSAA state finals record. Futsum was a three time Footlocker All-American, two times runner-up and seventh as a freshman, a Nike All-American and a Nike national champion and becoming the National Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year finished his high school career.
Kerry Zimmerman’s journey from a small town athlete to an influential community figure in Corydon, Indiana, is a story of dedication, perseverance and passion. Born in the humble setting of Harrison County’s Corydon, Kerry emerged as a remarkable athlete during his time at Corydon Central High School, graduating in 1979. His senior year was marked by an extraordinary achievement of earning four varsity letters across football, basketball and track and field. Notably, Kerry’s prowess in the long jump led him to state finals qualification in his junior and senior years, securing sixth and fourth places respectively.
Candyce was born prematurely on March 24, 1989, in Norfolk, Virginia. Candyce McGrone was a fighter from the very start. Weighing just over five pounds, she was small in stature but destined for greatness. Her journey to the track was as unexpected as it was remarkable. Initially disinterested in the sport, Candyce found her calling in the most unanticipated way. Her natural talent, first spotted by her grandmother during family races in the streets of Indianapolis, set her on a path to athletic stardom.
Brionna has been active and athletic since childhood. As a young girl, she could often be found racing around the neighborhood with other children. She began running track for Miami Middle School and the Fort Wayne Express Track Club, accomplishing much and winning multiple medals.
