The Indianapolis Star
David Woods covered track and field for The Indianapolis Star from 1994 through 2022, reporting from six summer Olympic Games. He has written for newspapers in Illinois, California and Indiana, and most recently for the DyeStat track and field website. He is the only four-time winner of Track and Field Writers of America’s Jesse Abramson Award for journalism.
He has been reporting on the sport since 1972, beginning at The News-Gazette in Champaign, Illinois, while a University of Illinois student. He witnessed his first state meet in 1967 and ran the mile relay at the state meet for his Urbana High School team in 1971. He has been a devotee of the sport ever since.
Woods has more than 30 national and state writing awards, including recognition for his 2022 investigation into allegations made against the Huntington University program. He also belongs to the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame. Among his four published books is one on Indiana University Olympians.
