In the fall of 1980, Williams placed fourth behind Curt Carey, James Murphy and Terry Brahm, all having been previously inducted into the Indiana Track and Field and Cross County Hall of Fame.  He was chosen as a member of the three-man Indiana cross country team that was to run in the national high school cross country championship.

In the spring of 1981, he was unbeaten in the 3200 and finished with a state championship, breaking away from a strong field early in the race and not to be challenged.  A couple weeks later, Williams won the Midwest Meet of Champions in a time of 9:00 against the best from Michigan, Ohio and Illinois.  His North High School coach Jon Siau said of his prize runner, “David is a coach’s dream.  No one worked him, his natural talent and heart were clearly on display his senior year."

Williams continued his running at Purdue University under the guidance of Mike Poehlein.  While at Purdue, he was a solid performer for four years, earning seven letters and competing in three NCAA cross country championships.

Williams now resides in Batesville, Indiana, with wife Sheri and enjoying grandchildren from their children Crystal, Keith and Jamie.
