1980 Gary West 4x400 Relay
Kenneth Carter, Craig Peterson, Walter Monagan-Brown, Sortero Burnett
Gary West Side 4x400 relays have been the dominate relay since the IHSAA went metric in 1980 and for 41 years they have held the IHSAA State Meet record of 3:13.66. Only two other teams have broken the 3:15 mark (Center Grove 2011 and Hamilton Southeastern 2013).
Kenneth Carter
Carter started his track career with the Mayor Hatcher Youth Foundation (AAU) during the summer of his 14 year, running the 600 meters. At West Side High School, he ran the 400 meter and 4x 400 relay, ultimately being named All-American. His talent led to a full scholarship in track and field to Prairie View A&M. After his collegiate career running in meet hosted by the NAIA, SWAC, Texas Relays and others, Carter now resides in Houston, Texas enjoying BBQing.
Craig Peterson
After is stardom career at Gary West High School, Peterson served in the United States Air Force. He earned a Batchelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts degree in Human Science & Counseling from Liberty University.
The foundation of his life is faith and family. The induction into the Indiana Track and Field Hall of Fame is not only recognition of personal achievement, but embodiment of what his family taught.
Walter Monagan-Brown
After four IHSAA championships, 1979 4x220, ’80 4x400, and ’81 400 and 4x400 and a second in 1980 400, Walter would win the 1981 AAU National Junior Olympic in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 46.93. He was a high school All-American in both his junior and senior years. Walter took his talents to Louisiana Tech University for a year, then to Parkland Junior College and to Texas Southern University. During his collegiate career he had the honor of running against the best the United States had Carl Lewis, Herschel Walker, etc.
Sortero Burnett
Sortero was known for his relay participant. As a sophomore, he ran on the IHSAA state champion 4x220 and a third place 4x440 and in 1980 he ran on both the 4x200 and 4x400 championship relays. After graduating, Sortero attended Prairie View A&M University.
