Coach - Bloomington South High School
Larry Williams graduated from Bloomington High School North (BHSN) in 1980. He was a member of the track program the last two years under the guidance of Coach John McNichols. While Williams was a student at Indiana University, Coach McNichols invited him to assist with the track program at BHSN as a volunteer.
In the spring of 1983, Williams left the BHSN program to go to Bloomington High School South as a paid assistant coach to Tom Alwine. After assisting Alwine for two track seasons and being the volunteer girls cross country coach, Williams became the head coach of boys cross country and track and field starting in the fall of 1984.
In the early years, Williams tagged along with his former event coach Ralph Seiboldt to IATCCC Meetings, assisted with high school indoor meets and learned as much as possible from other coaches: McNichols, Seiboldt, Marshall Goss and Indiana University Head Coach Sam Bell. During these years valuable peer-learning sessions were built from the ground up with Olympic pole vaulter Dave Volz and Coach Tim Richey. These Hall of Famers provided great mentoring, resources and friendship over the years. Williams continues to credit the program’s success to the collaboration, time and expertise shared by paid and volunteer assistant coaches, as well as numerous high school and college coaches from around the state. His passion for his athletes continues to be his priority.
Under Williams’s guidance, the Bloomington South track and field program has earned 66 state medals of which 12 were state champions. As a team, they accomplished five conference titles, 19 sectional titles, 11 regional titles and seven top 10 team finishes at the state finals. In cross country, seven individuals medaled at the state finals, plus two conference titles, nine sectional titles, seven regional titles, five semistate titles and 21 state finals with five top 10 team finishes including a podium finish of fifth in 2018.
