Larry Henning

Larry Henning has been involved in track and field and cross country for almost his whole life. He ran track and cross country at Valparaiso High School. After college, he started teaching at Carroll. Since retired, he continues as a volunteer coach for both the girls’ and boys’ programs.

Larry Henning has been involved in track and field and cross country for almost his whole life. He ran track and cross country at Valparaiso High School. After college, he started teaching at Carroll. Since retired, he continues as a volunteer coach for both the girls’ and boys’ programs.

Henning has been involved in officiating at many levels. He has officiated at the IHSAA state finals for over 25 years as a timer and umpire.  Since 2013 he has served as head umpire and in meets leading up to the former Bomber-Boiler Relays and the current Hoosier State Relays, plus many Special Olympics meets.

On the collegiate level, Henning has worked numerous indoor, outdoor and cross country NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA regional and championship meets. He has also worked at hundreds of indoor, outdoor and cross country meets in the Midwest along with conference championships, including the Big Ten, HCAC, Missouri Valley and others.

On the national level, he has been a TAC or USATF official since 1986, now at a level of a Master Official. Following is a list of some meets he has worked: the 1996 Olympics as an umpire, eight Olympic Trials from 1988-2016, about 30 outdoor Senior and Junior National Championships since 1988, three Indoor National Championships, three Sport Festivals (one in Colorado Springs and two at Southern Illinois), one Goodwill Games in New York, one World Police and Fire Games in Indianapolis, one World University Games in Buffalo, New York, four Junior Olympics, many Youth National Meets and many indoor and outdoor Masters Championships. He has won National Special Olympic Championships Awards, plus  the USATF Charles Ruter Award, USATF Indiana Association Official of the Year, Indiana USATF Marshall Goss Official of the Year Award, the Dave Bowers Award and the IATCCC Meredith Payne Award. Henning has been on the USATF Indiana Association Board for many years, the Indiana Track and Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame Museum’s board of directors, the USATF National Awards Committee and now is the Chairman for Zone 7.
