Ronald Golston

Ronald Golston was the 1964 IHSAA State Champion in the 880 yard run with a time of 1:55.7, which was a new school record.

Ron was a 1961 cross country finalist. He was a member of the championship 1963 Indiana Inter-Conference Mile Relay at Purdue University. In 2014, he was a member of Indiana’s Golden Track and Field Team and a member of the 1963 IHSAA state finals runner-up mile relay team.

Ron was a 1961 cross country finalist. He was a member of the championship 1963 Indiana Inter-Conference Mile Relay at Purdue University. In 2014, he was a member of Indiana’s Golden Track and Field Team and a member of the 1963 IHSAA state finals runner-up mile relay team.

Ron was a member of the Gary Tolleston state runner-up track team. He was undefeated during the entire indoor and outdoor regular season his senior year. He set a new Gary city indoor record of 1:59.0 in the 880-yard run in 1964 at the University of Chicago fieldhouse, breaking the old record by two seconds. Ron was rated number seven in the nation in 1964 in the 880-yard run.

He was a member of the 1965 Arkansas AM&N College sprint medley relay team that set a record and was only 2.5 seconds off the world record at the Southwest Missouri State Relays in Springfield, Missouri. This record still stands at 3:23.3.

Ronald went on to work as a successful head track and cross country coach at Gary Horace Mann High School. He also worked as a probation officer with the Lake County Superior Court Juvenile Division, a senior state parole agent with the Indiana Department of Correction and a psychiatric social worker with the Gary Community School Corporation.

Ron holds a B.A. in sociology from Arkansas AM&N College, an M.A. in liberal studies from Valparaiso University and a Master of Social Work from Indiana University. He was awarded the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University School of Social Work Alumni Association. Ron is a United States Marine Vietnam Veteran.
