New Washington High School
Angie Ryker became New Washington High School’s only All-American high school athlete by winning two IHSAA State Finals shot put competitions in 1985 and 1987. The southeastern Indiana community located in rural Clark County with a high school of only 255 students, it is ranked as among the smallest in the state.
She won the 1988 US Junior National Championship in the shot put, which qualified her to become a member of the US U-19 national team, competing at the international meet held in Sudbury, Canada, taking ninth place.
A four year letter winner at Indiana University from 1988-1991 she won two Big Ten Titles in the shot put in 1988 outdoors and 1989 indoors. She was the NCAA Indoor runner-up in Indianapolis. She was a five time NCAA All-American: four times in shot put in 1988 and 1989 indoors, plus 1989 and 1990 outdoors and once in the discus in 1990.
After more than thirty years, best marks in the shot put of 15.64 meters or 51-3 3/4 indoor and in the discus 52.10 meters or 170-11 remain among the Big Ten top 20 all-time list.
