In 1930, senior Kenneth Sandbach of Gary Emerson defeated freshman Amos Abrams in the 120-yard-highhurdles at the IHSAA State Championship Meet setting the state record.

Abrams broke or tied the records five times (high hurdles 1931 at 15.4 and tied in 1933, low hurdles broke the record as a first-year student by 1.2 seconds 24.6 .
