Charles Wesley Wade, Culver High School’s 1923 star track and field and basketball athlete, had many fine performances. He led his teams to both the basketball and track and field county championships. In track and field, he won all four of the field events: high jump (5-6), broad jump (18-9 1-4), pole vault (10-10 1/2) and he set an all-time shot put record at 49-9. With great anticipation, Wade would enter the IHSAA State Finals with the best throw in the Sectional competition at 45-10 1/4, with Donald Bell of Whitestown next with a throw of 45-4 1/2. (Bell would set the State Meet record in 1924 with aa throw of 47-6 1/2).
\Homer Knee of Wabash was also in the competition. Knee would win the State Finals in 1925 with a record throw of 51-5 (3-10 1/2 better than Donald Bell’s record). Wade would throw two feet farther than little-known W. Floyd of Indianapolis Emmerich Manual High School, who qualified for the Finals with a throw of 41-7 and won the Finals with a record throw of 47-3 1/4. It was reported that Wade’s throw was a foul as he touched the circle and after the meet the measurement of the circle proved to be too short of the official diameter. However, nothing could be done to rectify the mistake.
